A commissioned officer of NAMRIA Hydrography Branch won in a photography contest held recently to support coffee growing in the country.

Lt Commander Carter S Luma-ang of the Hydrography Branch earned the top spot in the Photography Contest on Coffee sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Agriculture (DA) of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). and RED Lorenzo Caranguian of DA.

The picture submitted by LCdr Luma-ang, with a caption ‘Passing on the Tradition’, shows a grandfather and his grandson transplanting a coffee seedling. The picture earned the nod of the judges for the first prize as it adheres to the theme of the conference “Nurturing the Coffee Industry Towards Sustainability and Inclusive Growth.” The picture was taken in the mountains of Kapangan, Benguet where coffee growing is still thriving despite the preference of some farmers to plant fast producing crops.

The winning photo: "Passing on the Tradition".

LCdr Luma-ang received his award during the opening program of the 2nd Philippine Coffee Conference at the Hotel Supreme, Baguio City last 23 November 2016. He considers the award relevant since their home is surrounded by coffee as his maternal grandmother is a coffee grower. His parents who are now retired also include coffee growing in their activities.

Hydrography Branch officers have been winning in several photography contests in the previous years. Winners include Ltsg Gilbert A Alviola in the 2015 Women’s Month Photo Contest sponsored by the Philippine Commission on Women and Government Service Insurance System and Ens Roland James R Orbeta in the monthly contest of the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation.
