NAMRIA recently conducted training on tidal observation, tidal data acquisition, and tidal data processing and analysis for the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).  Fourteen PHIVOLCS personnel completed the learning activity which was held at the Ramada Manila Hotel, Binondo, Manila on 05-09 December 2016.  They were mostly from the agency’s Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division and their work has to do with installing tide gauge instruments and monitoring earthquakes and tsunamis.

Training assistance on tidal data collection, interpretation, and processing of wave and tide instruments was specifically requested  from NAMRIA, through its administrator, Dr. Peter N. Tiangco, by PHIVOLCS, through its director, Dr. Renato U. Solidum.  Aside from providing the participants with the necessary skills, the training also partly intended to come up with a uniform format for the tide gauge stations data of both agencies which they can use for a common purpose.   There were also hands-on exercises in tidal data processing and analysis using various tidal data samples that simulate normal data, timing error, datum shift, storm surge and tsunami events data.

NAMRIA HB Officials graced the training facilitated by POD.
HB Director Commodore Jacinto M. Cablayan, POD Chief Mr. Dennis A. Bringas and the training participants.

In his keynote address, the director of NAMRIA Hydrography Branch (HB), Commodore Jacinto M Cablayan, welcomed the participants and reminded them of the importance of tidal observations and tidal data processing and analysis in the interpretation of sea level during a tsunami or storm surge events.  He further reiterated to the trainees that the data outputs delivered by tide gauge stations are crucial in the publication or cancelation of any sea level hazard.

Oceanographers from the Physical Oceanography Division (POD)-NAMRIA HB coordinated and facilitated the training.  The POD resource persons discussed topics such as the following: Ocean Tides, Sea Level and Vertical Datum, Tidal Predictions, Leveling Instruments and Tidal Leveling.  Field exercise on tidal leveling was also conducted to familiarize the participants with the operation and setting up of leveling instruments. They were given instructions on how to establish Tide Gauge Benchmarks, make a description, and give appropriate labels.

On the last day of the training, there was a lively discussion between PHIVOLCS and NAMRIA.  Both agencies expressed their commitment to continue their partnership, through the strengthening of their scientific and technical obligation to further improve their delivery of services with emphasis on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.  The discussion was led by Dr. Bartolome C. Bautista, PHIVOLCS deputy director, and Capt. Amante R. Caluya, NAMRIA HB officer in charge-assistant director.
