Administrator Tiangco welcomes 2017

A headstart for NAMRIA! It’s the first Monday of 2017 and the day started with the traditional flag raising ceremony. Administrator Dr. Peter N. Tiangco welcomed everybody and talked about “Bagong Taon, Bagong Pag-Asa,” looking forward to new opportunities for change, being better, and making a difference towards agency excellence. Administrator Tiangco highlighted the major concerns for this year, such as: 1) Philippine Islands project using the latest technology with the new count which has reached to us having 7,641 islands; 2) Unified Mapping Program; 3) sustainability of Geoportal project; 4) United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management Strategic Framework; 5) topographic large scale map production; 6) development and maintenance of the National Geodetic Reference System; 7) geodetic system modernization and its alignment to the international terrestrial reference frame; 8) updates on environment and natural resources data on land cover, coastal resources, low-lying areas vulnerable to sea-level rise and land classification; and 9) compiling and updating of nautical charts and publications and provision of technical support in the delineation of the country’s maritime zones and boundaries.

Furthermore, Administrator Tiangco cited the agency’s’ international obligation to maintain the chairpersonship of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names on the Asia South-East Division until 2018; and for NAMRIA to remain as the National Hydrographic Office and the focal point for the International Hydrographic Organization and the East Asia Hydrographic Commission. He also cited the agencys’ responsibility to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the form of technical assistance in the final mapping and preparation of draft bills fixing the final forest limits of the country, including validation of the general location of areas under the National Integrated Protected Area System; and to provide assistance to Congress in the deliberations on priority bills on maritime zones, archipelagic sea lanes, comprehensive land use, and protected areas.
 
 
NAMRIA employees welcome the year by greeting the Administrator and NAMRIA officials during the flag ceremony.
 
For the agency's continuous development, Administrator Tiangco mentioned the implementation of the Competency-Based System, Recruitment and Placement System, Strategic Performance Management System, Strategic Human Resource Development Plan, employee engagement, and the implementation of the NAMRIA Quality Management and Operations Manual, and the migration from ISO 9001:2008 to ISO 9001:2015.
 
In addition, he acknowledged the Hydrography Branch in extending their services to help locate the MV Starlite Atlantic, a passenger vessel that sank off Tingloy in Batangas at the height of Typhoon “Nina” (international name: Nock-ten) last 28 December 2016.
 
Administrator Tiangco ended his message by saying “Kung tayong lahat ay magkakasama, kung tayong lahat ay kikilos, lalo na sa matinong paraan, walang pagsubok na hindi natin kakayanin, magagawa natin nang mabuti ang mga dapat natin gawin.”
