Through the support of the NAMRIA officials and employees, the Bayanihang Bayan Desk  conducted a lecture on map appreciation for the students of the Alternative Learning System (ALS), Department of Education (DepEd), City of Manila’s First District, Tondo I.  Around a hundred students and their parents attended the lecture held at the First District Welfare Office of the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW), Juan Nolasco St., Tondo, Manila on 08 June 2018.
In her opening remarks, Ms. Honeyleen M. Mabaet, MDSW-DWO I Chairperson, welcomed all the participants and commended NAMRIA and the literacy volunteers of Abot-Alam Program of ALS for coming up with this kind of activity.  An orientation on the importance of ALS by DepEd Manila Schools Division Office ALS District I Head, Ms. Leah Amor E. Antonio, immediately followed Ms. Mabaet’s opening remarks.
The author, as the resource person for the lecture, presented in Filipino the definition, mapmaking process, types, and uses of maps.  Also discussed were NAMRIA’s background, mandate, branches, core functions, and the NAMRIA Museum of Surveying and Mapping.  Brand-new and pre-loved school and office supplies, and lunch bags were donated to the literacy volunteers and students.

The Governance Act for Basic Education otherwise known as Republic Act 9155 stipulates the establishment of ALS, wherein out-of-school children, youth, and adult population are provided with basic education.  ALS is a parallel learning system in the Philippines that provides a practical option to the existing formal instruction, when one does not have access to formal education in schools.  The formal education system in the Philippines is classroom-based and managed by trained formal school teachers, while the ALS non-formal education is held outside the classroom and managed by ALS learning facilitators, such as mobile teachers, district ALS coordinators, and instructional managers at an agreed schedule and venue between the learners and facilitators.  (Source:
