NAMRIA provides technical training in GIS for NIA-Region XI

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Region 11 tapped the services of NAMRIA for the conduct of Basic Geographic Information System (GIS) training using QGIS application. The training stemmed from the request sent by the Regional Manager, Mr. Jimmy L. Apostol, and materialized with the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between NAMRIA and NIA.  The event was held at the Star Hotel in Davao City on 21-25 January 2019.  Mr. Alvin F. Laurio served as the training resource person while Mr. Marco Arkiel C. Ilagan and this writer as the training technical assistants/facilitators.

The training aimed to familiarize NIA Region 11 staff with the functionalities of GIS that they can use in the planning, development, and management stages of implementing various irrigation projects.  The training participants included technical staff from the NIA regional office and satellite offices in the different provinces of the region.  They are practitioners of civil engineering, agricultural engineering, computer science, and other courses related to planning and administration.

As a background, NIA constructs multipurpose water resources projects designed primarily for irrigation and secondarily for hydraulics power development and/or other uses such as flood control, drainage, land reclamation, domestic water supply, roads and highways construction and reforestations among others.  Its powers and functions are in accordance with Republic Act 3601 as amended by Presidential Decree 552 and Presidential Decree 1702.
