NAMRIA, through its Geomatics Training Center, conducted a training on Basic Geographic Information System (GIS) for the personnel of the Department of Health (DOH) Regional Office that covers Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan (MIMAROPA). It was held at the function hall of the Hive hotel in Quezon City on 28 November to 02 December 2022.
The conduct of the hybrid basic GIS training stemmed from the Memorandum of Agreement between NAMRIA Administrator, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco, PhD and Dir. Mario S. Baquilod, MD, CESO IV for DOH-MIMAROPA.

The activity formed part of NAMRIA’s continuing effort to help capacitate government institutions like the DOH-MIMAROPA. The objective was to build their confidence in the usage of the application for GIS that would greatly improve, enhance, and accomplish their tasks of generating maps for their facilities, and update the regional health facilities database and their corresponding datasets that formed part of the national health facilities database.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Roberto Martin C. Mercene, Medical Officer III and head of the Health Facility Development Unit (HFDU) delivered a message for the participants. The HFDU is a unit that develops plans, policies, programs, projects, and strategies related to health facility development, planning, operations, and maintenance. Dr. Mercene highlighted the importance of the training in developing the technical competencies of personnel from DOH-MIMAROPA Regional Office and provincial health offices in the performance of their official functions and achieving their targets.

The training team leader, Mr. Alvin F. Laurio, acknowledged Dr. Mercene’s message and thanked the whole contingent of both DOH-MIMAROPA and NAMRIA. He emphasized the importance of learning about the complexities of modern technology and keeping pace with the continuing changes and technological improvements.
The training was composed of 22 DOH personnel from areas of MIMAROPA and Regional Office, and was a combination of synchronous and asynchronous modes of teaching. The topics were map appreciation, GIS overview, software installation, application of GIS functions in data management, georeferencing and digitization, data editing, and spatial overlay and analysis. On the last day of the training, the participants were able to create a map layout as one of the required final outputs.

The NAMRIA training team was composed of Mr. Alvin F. Laurio and Engr. Hazeline Glace A. Ali-Cacapit (who lectured online on delegated topics) as resource persons, with Mr. Marco Arkiel C. Ilagan as a technical assistant. This writer also served as lecturer-facilitator on topics delegated by the training team leader. The training was conducted with adherence to the safety protocols set by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.
