Connect, communicate, change: NAMRIA participates in 1st DENR IO Summit

Information officers (IOs) from the DENR Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service (SCIS), regional offices, staff and line bureaus, and attached agencies converged for a summit, which was held in Pergola Hall of Ciudad Christhia Resort in San Mateo, Rizal on 16-18 January 2019.  NAMRIA participated in the summit through this writer who is one of the information officers of the agency’s Geospatial Information Services Division, Geospatial Information System Management Branch.  The summit was held to review, assess, synchronize, and align the information, education, and communication activities of all of the information units of DENR with its priority programs.
 
SCIS Officer in Charge (OIC)-Dir. Maria Matilda A. Gaddi welcomed and thanked all the information officers who attended the summit.  After her opening remarks, she discussed the DENR Strategic Communication Roadmap (2016-2020) and the functions and directions of the SCIS vis-à-vis the DENR Regional Public Affairs Offices.

DENR Undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Unit Concerns and Supervising Undersecretary (Usec.) for SCIS, Usec. Benny D. Antiporda, emphasized in his keynote speech the importance of information officers in the bureaucracy.  He also motivated and challenged those present to espouse making themselves self-relevant, proactive, and solutions-based when facing problems.  He ended his speech by saying that, “In this world filled with so many problems, I encourage all of you to be catalysts for change.”

Ms. Jacqueline P. Galvez, DENR consultant for human resource and organizational development, acted as the main resource person for the summit.  She facilitated the holding of workshops and discussions on the DENR-SCIS vision and mission, formulation of core values, organizational assessment, strategic planning and communication, and review of technical competencies.  The summit also served as a venue to discuss various issues and concerns of all DENR information units.

In her closing remarks, OIC-Director Gaddi thanked Ms. Galvez for sharing her expertise and all the information officers for their active participation.  She also congratulated everyone for the success of the summit.  Mr. Carlos C. Bartolata, Jr. of the DENR Training and Development Division served as facilitator during the event.
